What is a "Forgotten Classic"?

In traditional Irish and folk music, certain tunes are true traditional standards with extensive recording lineage across vintage LPs and landmark group recordings (e.g. Altan, The Bothy Band, De Dannan). However, over decades, some of these classic standards have quietly slipped out of modern session circulation. The Forgotten Classics tool helps you rediscover and revive these legendary tunes.

How the Classic Score is Calculated

This tool enforces strict heritage criteria to ensure tunes are genuine classics before scoring them:

Strict Heritage Baseline: A tune MUST have at least 10 commercial album recordings, 8 distinct recording artists, and 10 tunebook appearances across the database to qualify.
Quality Signal: Calculated from total commercial recordings (40%), distinct recording artists (30%), total albums (15%), and setting variations (15%).
Neglect Penalty: Penalizes tunes heavily based on modern player neglect (low user bookmark saves and tunebook adds).
The Classic Score Math:
Classic Score = Quality Signal - (40 * Bookmark Percentile) - (25 * Tunebook Percentile)
A high score highlights tunes with rich recording heritage that modern session players have neglected or stopped saving.
