What is a "Hidden Gem"?
In traditional folk music, some of the absolute finest tunes are recorded on classic studio albums by
master fiddlers, accordionists, or flutists, yet almost never get played in standard pub sessions. The
Hidden Gem Finder digs out these underrated masterpieces so you can expand your repertoire
with proven, high-quality material that won't be the same 10 reels everyone else plays.
How the Gem Score is Calculated
Every tune is scored by comparing its professional recording footprint against its live session popularity
among the same rhythm type (e.g., reels vs. reels):
Evidence Levels Explained
- Strong Evidence Recorded at least 20 times by 15+ distinct
commercial artists. High certainty of pro recording pedigree.
- Medium Evidence Recorded at least 10 times by 8+ distinct
artists. Solid pedigree.
- Weak Evidence Recorded 5+ times. Good candidate but fewer
commercial recordings.
How to Use This Tool as a Session Musician
- Filter by Rhythm & Key: Pick a rhythm (e.g., Reel or Jig) and a key matching your
instrument's sweet spot (e.g. D major, G major, E minor).
- Preview ABC Sheet Music: Glance at the opening 2-bar melody incipit directly in the
table to test if you know it or like the melody line.
- Track Your Practice: Check the box next to tunes you are learning. Your progress is
saved automatically in your browser so you can build your personal "Hidden Gem setlist".
