What is a "Versatile Tune"?
A Versatile Tune is an ultimate "bridge tune" or set builder. In traditional sessions,
certain tunes possess musical characteristics that allow them to flow smoothly into or out of dozens of
different tunes across different keys, modes, and regional styles.
How the Versatility Rating is Calculated
This tool ranks tunes by measuring transition network breadth in real recorded session sets among the same
rhythm type (e.g., reels vs reels):
- Distinct Follow-On Tunes: Number of unique tunes that players transition into
immediately *after* playing this tune.
- Distinct Lead-In Tunes: Number of unique tunes played immediately *before* this tune in
sets.
- Set Position Flexibility: Balanced performance as a set opener, middle bridge, or set
closer.
- Cross-Key Lift: Ability to connect smoothly across major, minor, and dorian modes.
How to Use This Tool as a Session Musician
- Rescue & Glue Sets: When building a 3-tune set, use a highly versatile tune as your
middle tune to easily link your opening tune to a driving finish.
- Call Tunes in Live Sessions: If you aren't sure what tune your session mates know next,
